More Photography Adventure in my backyard

Well, I missed any chance I had to take photos of my corner of the world with empty streets. I have to admit I was a bit disappointed. The ones I saw that others took were quite impressive, and unlikely to be offered more than once in a lifetime. I did get chances to take some interesting shots for a newbie though. In this post I’ll discuss those photos of unique moments I experienced lately.

Wildlife photography in my backyard

First, on one of my walks out when I happened to be experimenting with my new camera I saw a fox basically in our backyard! I was almost in the house when I spotted it, actually putting my camera away in its bag.

I learned that day- bring both lenses, even if you only plan to use one! The 18-55mm lens did not have enough zoom to do much better than my phone camera would have. It definitely took a nicer picture, but the ones I took with the 70-300mm lens are the ones I chose to share here. I also chose to only use the auto mode.

F35 Action!

My next photography adventure was an F35 flyover throughout Vermont in honor of healthcare workers! Despite feeling a bit… lazy… I knew this wasn’t an event that I could skip. At the very least as an aviation nut I would kick myself if I missed it. I am a big fan of our Green Mountain Boys, and was thrilled when they got the new fighter jet, but I don’t get to see them often since I don’t often find myself in Burlington anymore. Plus it would be good practice!

To see it though, I had to make a plan as to where and when to watch it. After studying the times they were to pass by hospitals on either side of Jay Mountain, and the path I anticipated they’d take I chose my spot. I chose to wait one town over from where I live in a spot with a good vantage point.

I didn’t quite dare get completely out of my vehicle due to the spot I chose being in a public ball field that happens to be next to the EMT building, but my Yukon has running boards which came in handy. The size of my longer lens did almost throw my balance off though, and limited how many shots were successful.. I definitely had fun taking them though!

The weather being beautiful was a help and hindrance. Obviously I wouldn’t complain about a cloudless sky, but I happen to know something in the background helps the visuals of airplanes!

Wildlife in a strange place!

This killdeer also happened to be in the same field! I believe it was protecting a nest, but couldn’t really be sure without disturbing it more than I felt I should. I don’t actually think I’d ever seen a killdeer before. I’m also not sure why it chose this spot to nest. It would normally have been a pretty active parking lot!

Photographic moments- fleeting, but memories saved

So, I’ve missed some interesting photographic opportunities, but I have also made the most of what has presented itself. I try to be ready with a camera any time there is a moment to be captured, but also enjoy being in the moment. The ones that are worth photographing are often the fleeting ones that are gone too fast.

Foxes don’t hang around for long, F35’s fly by, and kids just won’t stop growing up! Don’t forget to stop and watch it happen when you can.

On the surface I'm a 41 year old wife, and mom to 3 teenage girls. More than that though I am an accumulation of my adventures, and the skills I've gained. As a young woman I became an aviation maintenance technician through a school in S.C. I also lost my mother before I was 5. While my girls were growing up and becoming at least a bit more independent I graduated from the local community college with an associates degree in liberal studies. I've recently been reminded how important it is to continue learning, and following your own pursuits even while busy taking care of every one else.
